Spacial images

In this text and image, I document my perspective within and in relation to a painting I created during the semester. It is an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 89 × 144 cm. During the semester, I dealt intensively with the spatial effect in relation to light and darkness.

What does space mean? Space is what lies between things, the intangible between the tangible. What we perceive as solid and “spatial” draws a boundary—and in this in-between, space is created.

What is an image? An image, in the classical sense, is a visual medium, a window for seeing. It is about the medium. In this case: an acrylic painting. What is this image about? What is it meant to convey? A form, an appearance, a feeling. Here, it is about atmosphere. But it is not the product that is the focus, but the process. A spatial image conveys a story. In this case, it is the expression of a scene. A clear view, an elevated perspective. My point of view begins to blur. It is not about a finished image, but about the moment of its creation. The image is not in my head before it hits the canvas. No contours. No concept. No sketch. No idea.

The canvas is blank.

The spatial image begins to emerge - an interplay between what I see and what I imagine. The imagination feeds on the visible. The more there is to see, the more I can imagine. But also vice versa: the more I imagine, the more I see. A space that I don't know and have never seen before unfolds. It emerges simultaneously in my head and on the canvas. The process is a contact between me and the image in different phases. An image emerges. A space grows. And yet it remains undefined.
